Anand is the winner of many prestigious awards like

• Arjuna award in 1985
• Padma Sri, National Citizen's award, Soviet Land Nehru award in 1987
• Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991-1992
• Padma Bushan in 2000
• Chess Oscar in 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004.

Anand has also won the 'Book Of The Year' award for his book 'My Best Games Of Chess' in 1998 by the British Chess Federation.

Anand’s recent Achievement

An 8-game rapid match between Peter Leko and Viswanathan Anand was held and had a 5-3 victory for Anand. Both games on the final day were hard-fought, but both resulted in draw. The event was held in the National Theatre of Miskolc from 2 - 7 June 2009.

The 2009 match Anand - Leko in Miskolc consist 8 rapid games of 25 min + 10 sec increment. In case of a tie, blitz games will decide the champion. Every day the players will give press conferences and there will be several public events as well.
